Rediscover the magic of theatre as well as your holiday spirit in The Public Theatre's, original adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and A Homespun Holiday.
The Public Theatre's own version of Dickens' classic has become a yuletide tradition in Lewiston/Auburn. Given the many different theatrical productions of this classic novel, this adaptation remains many people's favorite for the way it imaginatively rejuvenates this familiar tale, bringing back the warmth, charm and humor at the heart of the story. Much of Dickens' original text is used, with six actors sharing narration, and portraying various characters with the aid of a simple hat, a cloak, a robe, etc. A live fiddler underscores the story with traditional Christmas music, and a hand-cranked wind machine and a thunder sheet creates a delightfully theatrical atmosphere. Uncluttered by spectacle, the audience's imagination is free to soar, and the story comes to life in a way you've never seen before.
We present this as a double feature with the show A Homespun Holiday. This delightful production features our Christmas Carol fiddler Jennifer Armstrong. A storyteller as well as musician, Jennifer pulls out her harp, banjo, fiddle and bagpipes, and brings to life a half hour of holiday stories and traditional seasonal songs, ending in a sing a long. You're truly a Scrooge if you don't leave the theatre filled with holiday spirit!
Our production of A Christmas Carol runs approximately 70 minutes - a great length for children! – and is directly followed by A Homespun Holiday.
