A PURR-FECT COMEDY AT THE PUBLIC THEATRE

September 30, 2010

The Public Theatre opens its 20th anniversary season with INDOOR/OUTDOOR, a sweet, smart and wacky comedy for pet lovers playing Oct 15-24th. This hip and clever comedy explores the crazy ways we love our pets and the way they love us back that makes it all worthwhile.

If your pet was unhappy, would you go into therapy with them to save the relationship? Samantha is a pampered housecat madly in love with her owner until the day an alley cat rocks her world with tales of the great outdoors ("Have you ever seen a beach? It's like a giant litter box.") Torn between the security of her home and a desire to explore her wild side, Samantha makes friends with a therapist and hilariously works through her "relationship issues" with her owner.

"The great thing about INDOOR/OUTDOOR", says director Christopher Schario, "is that it is less about cats than it is about unconditional love, and our desire to be seen and understood deeply by the people we're involved with. It's really a wonderfully funny and touching romantic comedy for anyone who's ever been in a relationship… human or otherwise! It's also the kind of play that will make you go home and give your pet a big hug. And for those of you who become inspired to go out and adopt an animal from the shelter, we're happy to say that we have the Androscoggin Humane Society on board with us as a sponsor of this production for that very reason."

Starring as the feline protagonist Samantha, will be Sandra Blaney. Sandra has appeared regularly in theaters throughout New England and New York, and was seen onstage last season at The Public Theatre in both Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and A Christmas Carol. Playing her owner Shuman, will be New York actor Evan Mueller. When not acting or directing in regional theatres, Evan teaches theater at New York University. He was last seen onstage at The Public Theatre in The Nerd and Orphans. Also returning to The Public Theatre in the role of the wacky cat therapist Matilda will be Heather Dilly. Heather was last seen at TPT in Secrets of A Soccer Mom and Gun-Shy. This summer she appeared in the award winning show Screenplay, which will be moving Off-Broadway this January. New to The Public Theatre will be Matthew Schmidt in the role Oscar the alley cat. Most recently Matthew appeared in both revivals of Noises Off on Broadway and The Foreigner Off-Broadway. He has starred in several indie films and has had numerous appearances on NBC, CBS, MTV, and Comedy Central.

Creating the world that cats and humans will share is set designer Jennifer Madigan. Lighting this clever creation will be Bart Garvey and costumes will be designed by Annette Bourque.

Indoor/Outdoor runs Oct 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24. Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat at 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an added matinee performance on Saturday, Oct 23 at 2pm. For tickets call 782-3200. The Public Theatre is located at 31 Maple St, downtown Lewiston.
