The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s Professional Theatre opens its 21st season with the thrilling comic adventure AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, by Jules Verne, adapted by Mark Brown, Oct 14-23.

Hold onto your seats for an amazing race around the world! Join Phileas Fogg and his faithful French servant as they face stampeding elephants, raging typhoons and runaway trains in this breathtaking comic adventure. Comedy, romance and surprises abound in this whirlwind of a show, as five actors portraying 39 characters travel seven continents in this delightful adaptation of one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Perfect fun for audiences of all ages, The New York Times hailed this show as “fast-paced and smart enough to make sophisticated adults laugh out loud and shamelessly silly enough to keep children interested and entertained.” With The Public Theatre’s amazing Youth priced ticket of only $5 for children 18 and younger, this show is a great adventure for the entire family.

Typhoons and elephants onstage you ask? “Most definitely!” says director Janet Mitchko. “How?” you wonder. “Come see for yourself” she replies. She does hint that her motto for the show is “essence plus imagination equals theatrical magic”. This highly entertaining comedy adventure is similar in style to the fast-paced imaginative concept of the popular play The 39 Steps. “In our trip around the world”, says Mitchko, “we travel by train, ship, sledge and elephant, doing it all with 4 chairs, one table, a few trunks, several pieces of fabric and lots of theatrical magic created by costumes, (Jonna Klaiber); lights, (Bart Garvey); and sound (Neil James), all happening in front of a giant clock designed by Amber Callahan.

Starring as the Victorian hero of our story Phileas Fogg, is Robin Bloodworth. Public Theatre audiences may recognize Robin from his roles in Art, Fiction and The Woman in Black. His faithful French servant Passepartout, played by David Mason, will also be a familiar face to TPT audiences from his work in The Last Mass at St. Casimir’s and Almost, Maine. Most recently in Maine, David was seen starring in the latest John Cariani play Last Gas at Portland Stage. Chasing Mr Fogg around the world will be Michael Frederic as Detective Fix as well as other assorted characters. Michael has been onstage at TPT in multiple roles in A Christmas Carol as well as appearing in the play Deathtrap. New to Public Theatre audiences and playing a man of many hats and costumes (16 characters in total) will be Dan Matisa. Joining this jolly group of men on the journey will be Audra Wahhab as the lovely Indian princess Aouda. This talented cast of five professional actors from New York and across the country will be bringing a total of 39 different characters to life in the span of two hours. What a wonderful adventure this will be.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS runs Oct 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23. Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat at 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an added matinee performance on Saturday, Oct 22 at 2pm. For tickets call 782-3200. The Public Theatre is located at 31 Maple St, downtown Lewiston. Visit www.thepublictheatre.org for more information.
