High school seniors Caroline and Anthony have more in common than they know. She’s a smart, snarky teenager with a medical condition that has stopped her from attending school, and he’s a popular athlete and academic superstar with a passion for jazz. Mysteriously forced together to complete a book report, they discover a shocking secret that will connect them forever. Joyful and heartbreaking, I AND YOU carries an uplifting message for this moment in time when we all miss being connected.

I can honestly say that in 26 years of offering student matinees at The Public Theatre, I AND YOU, might be the most relevant and resonant play we have ever presented for students.

Imagine your class watching a play where the characters are two racially diverse high school students who spend their day discussing, dissecting, and celebrating Walt Whitman’s poem, “Leaves of Grass”, while they humorously and poignantly banter about cell phones, selfies, and teen-age self-esteem.

Last year over 500 students had tickets to attend our production of I AND YOU at The Public Theatre.  Unfortunately, due to COVID, we had to cancel the show on the day we were scheduled to open it. Only our preview audiences had the pleasure of seeing the play. They laughed, they wept and cheered the production. Their comments about the show are included in the “Sneak Peek video above.

Before we sent our actors home to New York, we recorded a private performance to give ourselves closure on this wonderful experience. We recently gained permission to share this special video with you and your students via a private viewing link for only $5 per person.

Playwright Lauren Gunderson uses Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself” as a metaphor for the journey of I and You, as well as a way for Caroline and Anthony to connect.  A surprise ending shockingly reveals Caroline to be in the hospital undergoing a much-needed liver transplant donated from a recently deceased high school student named Anthony.  The entire play has taken place in Caroline’s mind as she assimilates this new organ into herself. Anthony’s journey of breaking through Caroline’s defenses has been a literal one, for Caroline must truly receive and accept him to live.
