ASM / Company Manager
The Public Theatre is seeking applicants for a paid internship position for our 2022-23 season starting in August 2022 and continuing through the end of our season in May 2023 (with a possible extension through June 2023).
This position will serve as ASM on all productions, run crew, possible prop support, as well as perform the duties of Company Manager overseeing the care of the acting company.
The Public Theatre operates under the guidance of a small staff, so there is no bureaucracy to get lost in, all training is hands-on, and every effort is valued. Interns are assured of receiving specific tasks and individual attention. Our interns work, study and live with professionals, and have the opportunity to become an integral part of The Public Theatre.

Receive a hands-on education at a professional Equity Theatre.
Join a small staff with a ton of passion as we bring exciting new scripts from emerging playwrights, and provocative, life-affirming theatre to life. Our interns work and study with professionals and have an opportunity to become an integral part of The Public Theatre. Each season we offer 4- to 5-week internships where you’ll receive individual tasks and individual attention in:
- Directing – Serve as assistant director to the director and work with the Equity cast on all aspects of the production. You’ll also perform assistant stage manager duties, and be expected to attend all rehearsals and production meetings.
- Stage Management – Serve as assistant stage manager for a production, working closely with the Equity stage manager on all aspects of pre-production, rehearsal and performance.
- Acting – Acting interns will be present at all rehearsals and will be expected to perform the role in which they are cast. They will also serve as ASM’s when not in rehearsal for their role. An acting intern who is not cast in the production will serve as an understudy and an ASM. We also offer acting interns the opportunity for a free monologue and/or audition coaching session with the artistic and associate artistic director. This internship is given out only on an audition basis and for a specific role.
Compensation and Credit
College course credit can be arranged for internships. Housing for interns may be provided if needed. Each intern receives a small stipend. The Public Theatre operates under a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actor’s Equity Association, and Equity membership points are available for those interested.
