Audition Information

The Public Theatre is a Professional Equity Theatre operating under a Small Professional Theatre contract, category 9, producing an exciting selection of 4-6 contemporary plays each season. We provide housing and transportation for actors joining us from out of state. The Public Theatre is open to non-traditional casting and encourages participation by performers of all races and ethnicities.

Local and NYC EPA Auditions are generally held over the summer. More information on those can be found below.

Auditions for specific shows will be held by appointment only throughout the season and consist of sides from the script we are casting.

Non-Equity casting for specific roles will generally be held over the summer and auditions will consist of sides from the script we are casting.

The Public Theatre, an AEA SPT Category 9 located in Lewiston, Maine, will be holding their NYC EPA’s for their 2026-27 season at the NY AEA Audition Center located at 165 W 46th St on:

  • Tuesday, June 23, 2026 from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m in Studio B (Lunch 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.)
  • Wednesday June 24, 2026 from 9:30 am – 1:30  in Studio B.

MAINE Auditions for NON-EQUITY ROLES

The Public Theatre in Lewiston, Maine will be holding auditions for local non-Equity actors on Monday June 29  from 4pm – 7:00pm at The Public Theatre, 31 Maple St, Lewiston.

The Public Theatre’s rehearsal schedule is generally noon-8pm, M-F and 11-4 on Sat. Tech week hours for each production are (3) 10 hour days, (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday heading into opening night on Friday ).  Some shows have morning mid-week student matinees.

To audition, please prepare an audition side from the script located on our website for the character of your choice. If you would like to read the script, a password will be given to you at the time of scheduling your audition appointment.

Please bring a picture/resume stapled together. All roles are salaried.


STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling

Contract Dates: Oct 5 – Nov 8, 2026.

SYNOPSIS: Filled to the brim with humor, heart and hairdos, this beloved comedy celebrates the lives and friendship of six southern women who gather weekly in their local beauty parlor to navigate the joys and challenges of life together.

We are auditioning NON-EQUITY actors for the following roles:

TRUVY (Female, 40s-60s, any ethnicity): Owner of the beauty shop and the nexus of all gossip and good news in town.  Talkative and big hearted, her sense of humor and good nature could cheer lead anyone through a difficult situation.

ANNELLE (Female, 19 – early 20’s, any ethnicity): Young, quirky, shy, innocent and overly earnest, she has lost her way in a bad relationship and is learning to develop her self-esteem. She is Truvy’s assistant and current “project”.

SHELBY (Female, 25, any ethnicity): She is the prettiest, most popular and vivacious girl you will meet in town. Her positively, spirit and smile shine brightly in everything she does. She goes fearlessly where her heart leads her. Pink is her signature color.

OUISER (Female, late 60’s, any ethnicity): Ascerbic but lovable, she is a feisty and wealthy curmudgeon with a deep love for her dog. Despite her cantankerous exterior, her heart is a big as her wit.


A CHRISTMAS CAROL adapted by Christopher Schario.

CONTRACT DATES: 11/30 – 12/13/26.  Director: Christopher Schario

SYNOPSIS: This adaptation features a small cast playing multiple roles. All actors perform narration of Dickens’ text, as well as scene work in both British dialect and Standard American. Requires versatile playful actors, good with language.

We are auditioning NON-EQUITY actors for the following roles:

BELLE/FAN: (female, 20s-30s). Scrooge’s youthful, kind, loving and idealistic first love, and his exuberant younger sister.

CHILD: (Age 10-12, any gender) This is a modern-day child who begins reading the book out loud, gets enthralled and soon enters the story playing Tiny Tim and Turkey boy.

CLAIREE (Female, late 60’s, any ethnicity): The wealthy, witty and stylish widow of the former mayor in town, she is considered the local grande dame. She has a lot of life, humor, and surprises still left in her. She is a great combination of elegance and sass.

OUISER (Female, late 60’s, any ethnicity): Ascerbic but lovable, she is a feisty and wealthy curmudgeon with a deep love for her dog. Despite her cantankerous exterior, her heart is a big as her wit.

The following roles in A Christmas Carol are currently CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, if necessary.

SCROOGE: CAST Male 50’s and up, any ethnicity. Cold, stern, miserly and lacking empathy, he undergoes a positive emotional transformation.

BOB CRATCHIT/MARLEY CAST Male 40’s – 50’s, any ethnicity. A warm and loving father, timid employee, and a formidable ghost with an important message for Scrooge.

XMAS PAST/MRS. CRATCHIT: CAST Female 40’s – 50’s, any ethnicity.  A warm and loving mother with a lot of opinions. Also, a tenderhearted ghost who reminds Scrooge of a kinder way of life. CAST

FRED/CHRISTMAS PRESENT: CAST. (Male, 30s, any ethnicity). Scrooge’s indomitably cheery nephew brimming with goodwill. Doubles as the ghost of Christmas Present filled to the brim with this same joyful spirit.

Darker the Night, Brighter the Stars by John Cariani

SYNOPSIS: From the author of the popular play “Almost, Maine” comes an amusing and heartfelt look at life in Northern Maine amidst a younger generation of Mainers as they wish on shooting stars and ask questions about love, life and themselves in this hopeful, funny and timely new play. 


Each of the four actors plays multiple characters and tracks yet to be determined in this play comprised of a variety of two person scenes. All characters are young adults, late teens – early 20’s navigating the transition into adulthood experiencing life-altering milestones such as entering the military, starting college, coming out, falling in love, and moving on.

 MAN #1: Early 20’s, any ethnicity. Slightly awkward, a bit adrift, yearning for connection while balancing sadness and hope.

Primary Trust by Eboni Booth

Director: TBA

CONTRACT DATES: Feb 22 – March 21, 2027.  

SYNOPSIS: Winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for drama, this hopeful, quirky and moving play tells the story of a lonely man named Kenneth who meets his imaginary friend every night for Mai Tai’s at a local tiki bar. When he unexpectedly loses his long-term job in a bookstore, Kenneth must step outside his comfort zone to look for work and discovers the joy of making real friends and connecting with others.


KENNETH: Male, 38, Black/African American. Sensitive, introverted, insecure and isolated, he is a man struggling with intense, unresolved childhood trauma who uses his daily routine to cope with the world.  This role requires an actor with excellent comedic timing, vulnerability and strong narrative skills as he frequently breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience.  When his job at the bookstore ends, he finds a new job at the Primary Trust bank and discovers a new world of friends and possibilities.

 BERT: Male, 30’s-40’s, Black/African American. He is Kenneth’s supportive and fiercely loyal best friend, and the one person Kenneth totally trusts. He is a kind-hearted, fun and nurturing friend who offers Kenneth life advice, reassurance and a listening ear.

 CORRINA / WALLY’S WAITRESS / BANK CUSTOMERS: Female 30’s. Black/African American. A multiple track role for a versatile actress, she plays a warm and friendly waitress at Wally’s Tiki Bar who breaks thru Kenneth’s shell to become his first “real-world” friend as well as multiple comedic customers and service workers who interact with Kenneth.

 CLAY / SAM / WAITER: Male mid 40’s – 60’s. Any ethnicity. This actor represents various authority and father figures in Kenneth’s life including the caring, weary, protective chain-smoking owner of the bookstore where Kenneth works, the empathic, paternal and boisterous bank manager who takes Kenneth under his wing, and a haughty waiter at a fancy French restaurant.

The Fiancé by Emily Bohannon

CONTRACT DATES: April 12 – May 9, 2027

SYNOPSIS: This heartwarming new comedy about love, loss and hope in 3 generations of single women celebrates the possibility finding love at any age. Imagine a young single woman, her middle-aged divorced mom and her 80 year-old widowed grandmother – and guess who’s the fiancé?!


BEA: female 70 – 80. Any ethnicity. Married for most of her life, Bea is now a widower and downsizing into a retirement community to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Intelligent, attractive and feisty, she has created an impressive bucket list to make the most of the time she has left. Her granddaughter talks her into trying online dating, but she ends up falling in love with a newly widowed man down the hall.

 JOAN: Female 50’s – early 60’s. Any ethnicity. Recently divorced, she has not yet made peace with the dissolution of her marriage or her ex-husband beginning to date. Finding herself single again at this point in her life was not what she expected. Practical and responsible, she looks out for both her mother and her daughter and is trying to remember how to care for herself.

 ALEX: Female Late 20’s – early 30’s. Any ethnicity. She is a successful young doctor getting over a broken engagement, Smart, attractive, and heartbroken, she is struggling to believe she will ever fall in love again. She adores her grandmother and they convince each other to try online dating.

 MALCOLM: Male 50’s – early 60’s. Any ethnicity. Joan’s ex-husband. He was a good dad and husband but he broke up his family when he asked for a divorce. He’s hoping he can find a way to stay connected to his daughter, mother-in-law and ex-wife, because he loves and misses them.

DOUG: Male 70-80. Any ethnicity. Charming and witty, he is a recent widower living in a retirement community. He falls in head over heels in love with Bea and impulsively proposes, discovering that maybe his heart wasn’t as ready to move on as quickly as he thought it was.
