Technical Director

Job Details:

Come make great theatre with us in a beautiful part of the world!  The Public Theatre is seeking a Technical Director for their 2024-25 season.  The person applying must be an excellent and conscientious self-motivated craftsperson with strong leadership abilities, who enjoys working collaboratively with a small staff to produce high quality theatre. Candidate must have broad technical skills, especially in scenic carpentry; lighting skills; leadership ability; and organizational skills.  Primary responsibilities for this position include oversight for all technical aspects of The Public Theatre, cost estimates, drafting, construction of sets, supervision of assistant, organization of shop and maintenance of theatre space and equipment. Knowledge of sound equipment a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Build all scenery.
  • Turn designer drawings into working drawings – determine how to execute the set design while adhering to the budget.
  • Organize all technical work around rehearsal schedule.
  • Figuring out and construction of any special effects.
  • Base paint scenery, including the stage floor.
  • Hanging of masking.
  • Assist with light load-in/hang and focus
  • Install backstage technical needs (cue lights, run lights, privacy screens, costume hooks).
  • Attend all technical rehearsals and weekly production meetings.
  • Attend relevant pre-production meetings with director and designers.
  • Determine production needs and technical budgets for each production with Artistic Director and Production Manager.
  • Oversee any assistant/production intern positions, train board operators
  • Clean stage and backstage area before previews.
  • At the end of each production, strike each set to a bare stage unless directed otherwise.
  • Return scenery to storage or if borrowed, to owner.
  • Research facility equipment i.e. tools, lighting, sound, masking fabric etc necessary to purchase.
  • Maintain technical drawings of the bare stage facility and lighting positions and update as necessary (needed for designers or anyone using our facility).
  • Maintain, organize, and inventory stock scenery and platforms.
  • Maintain all sound equipment including headset and monitoring system.
  • Maintain, organize and inventory all stock lighting equipment (includes cleaning dimmers, bench focusing, replacing plugs, cleaning cables, reordering tape, lamps, fuses, etc.)
  • Maintain and organize paint storage.
  • Maintain, organize, all prop, furniture storage.
  • With Production Manager, organize and oversee any non-theatre events and facility rentals. Each event involves setting up the use of the stage, the hanging of masking, determining lighting and sound needs.
  • Monitor and assist with building maintenance. (Arrange for locksmiths, plumbers, electricians as needed, repair broken theatre parts, e.g. broken seats, etc.)
  • Other tasks as requested by the Artistic Director and/or Production Manager.

Teaching Artist

IMMEDIATE OPENING

We are seeking a Teaching Artist for our Summer Theatre Camps.  These camps are a partnership between the Lewiston Recreation Department and The Public Theatre.  There are four one-week camps, beginning July 8 and concluding August 9.

The Teaching Artist will play a key role in day-to-day operations, assisting the Education Director with all aspects of the camps, including but not limited to teaching, leading theatre games/warmups, assisting at rehearsals, supervising the participants, and assuring an orderly and safe pick up/drop off each day.

Camps are held at Lewiston High School Monday through Thursday.  On Friday, camps take place at The Public Theatre, concluding with a public presentation on stage.  Camp participants are generally 8-14 years old, with 14 to 20 participants each week.

Camp Dates:

  • Musical Theatre Camp I – July 8-12, 2024
  • Theatre Camp I – July 15-19, 2024
  • Musical Theatre Camp II – July 29-August 2, 2024
  • Theatre Camp II – August 5-9, 2024

Compensation: $600.00 Per Week
Working Hours: 8:15 AM – 3:45 PM (Monday-Friday)

The ideal candidate would be available for all four weeks, but individual weeks may be available.

Designers

The Public Theatre is seeking resumes from New England based COSTUME, LIGHTING, and SET designers for consideration for future productions.
