Internships

We are currently accepting applications for internships for January 2025 – May 2025, with a possible extension into June 2025.

Receive a hands-on education at a professional Equity Theatre.

The Public Theatre’s mission is to create high quality professional theatre that is integral to the lifeblood of our community. Artistic excellence is central to our mission. We strive to assist the next generation of theatre professionals take that pivotal ‘first step’ in their career. Through this program, you will have hands-on experience working with various technicians, designers, Equity stage managers and actors. You will learn how to lead diverse groups of people, while making lasting, career-long connections. The Public Theatre operates under the guidance of a small staff, so there is no bureaucracy to get lost in. All training is hands-on, and every effort is valued. Our interns work, study and live with professionals, and have the opportunity to become an integral part of The Public Theatre.

Each season we offer full and partial season internships.
  • A full-time internship runs mid-August/Sept until late May.
  • A half-season internship runs mid-August/Sept through December or Jan through end of May.
  • Occasionally internships are available on a show-by-show basis.
All Internships include:
  • A weekly stipend (paid bi-weekly)
  • Fully furnished housing with WIFI, heat and utilities included.

 

We offer the following internships:

Production – This intern position works under the guidance of our production staff (Technical Director, Resident Designer and Production Manager) helping to create and realize sets, lights and sound for each production.

Assistant Stage Manager (ASM)/Company Manager –This position serves as ASM on all productions working closely with the Equity stage manager on all aspects of pre-production, rehearsal and performance. Duties also include run crew, prop support, as well as the duties of Company Manager overseeing the care of the acting company. If you are interested in Stage Management, this internship is for you.

DirectingSee above ASM/Company Manager responsibilities. In addition to the above ASM/Company Manager duties, you will also serve as assistant to the director and be expected to attend all rehearsals and production meetings and invited to attend note sessions. This internship will expose you to the experience a director needs to understand how a professional production is realized. You may be asked to do the dramaturgical work of creating a production study guide.

Acting – This internship is for an early career performer looking to learn more about the expectations and process of being a professional actor. The opportunity to perform is given out only on an audition basis for a specific role. Acting interns who have NOT been cast will assume all ASM/Company Manager responsibilities. We also offer acting interns the opportunity for a free monologue and/or audition coaching session with the Artistic Director and the opportunity to sit in on professional auditions. Acting interns are present at all rehearsals and will be expected to perform the role in which they are cast.
