Volunteer
Love the Arts? We Need Your Help.
The Public Theatre depends on the support of volunteers to help us to inspire the next generation of theatregoers and to engage those who already have a love for it. As a not-for-profit organization, our small artistic and administrative staff needs your help so that we may continue to share these stories of human experience with our community. If you love the arts and want to add to the vibrancy of our community, we want to hear from you!
Volunteer Opportunities
Help Get the Word Out
Hanging Posters
This is an extremely important job in helping to bring awareness to upcoming shows. Our volunteers post hundreds of posters in Lewiston/Auburn and the surrounding communities for each performance.
- In return for this important service, poster volunteers receive complimentary tickets to each show they post!
If you don’t see posters in an area you frequent and would like to help out, get in touch with us and we’ll see if there is an existing route or get you started on a new one.
The number of tickets awarded depends on the specific route. Typically, a volunteer will receive 1 ticket ($35 value) per 15-20 posters, with each route having a minimum of one ticket. The tickets are only good for the show you are posting and cannot be saved or switched to another production.
If you are interested posting posters, please Call (207) 782-2211 now for more information or Email Us Today!
Mailings
Postcard Mailings
This is an extremely important job in helping to bring awareness to upcoming shows. We mail out 5000-6000 postcards 5-6 times a year and the labels are applied by hand, the old-fashioned way. We also have other smaller mailing opportunities throughout the season. It’s a fun opportunity to meet new people and have fun while helping us in a big way.
- Mailing volunteers receive complimentary tickets to the show.

Work at the show
Ushering
While the cast and crew get ready backstage for the performance, our front-of-house staff and volunteers are getting the theatre ready for our patrons to arrive. Important pre-show activities include preparing playbills, greeting patrons, scanning tickets and showing patrons to their seats. As the “face” of the Theatre, your goal is for each theatergoer to have an exceptional experience.
Ushers may watch the show the day they work, pending seating availability. If seats are not available, or your schedule doesn’t allow you to stay the entire time, an alternative performance may be arranged.
Work Backstage
Backstage Crew
The run of a show is approximately a 2 week commitment. As part of this crew, you’ll work closely with theatre staff, directors and actors to assist in the production. You are required to be at all dress rehearsals and performances.
Join a Committee
Fundraising Committees
Many hands make light work. Volunteers help make the Silent Auction, Valentine Ball and other fundraisers so successful.
